Lord Simonds was born November 28, 1881, his Lordship was knighted 1937, sworn as a member of the Privy Council 1944, created a Life Peer as Baron Simonds 1944, and created an hereditary Peer as Viscount Simonds 1954.

His Lordship was an accomplished Barrister-at-law, a Judge of the High Court of Justice, and was the Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain (1951-1954).

Lord Simonds married Mary Hope, daughter of the late Judge Francis Hamilton Mellor, and had three sons (two twins), each of whom preceded him in death.

  • Robert Francis Simonds, who died in infancy
  • Gavin Alexander Simonds (twin), born 1915 and died as a result of illness contracted on active service in East Africa in 1951.

Because Lord Simonds had no surviving male heirs, upon his death in 1971, the Viscounty became extinct.
