Viscount Doneraile, Peerage of Ireland 1785

Arms of Viscount Doneraile

Arms: Azure fretty argent, a chief or.

Crest: A griffin, passant, or.

Supporters: Two griffins, or, wings elevated azure fretty argent.

This particular Coat of Arms is included here due to it's stunning appearance. The use of the fretty (or lattice) design on the wings of the griffin supporters is not rare, but is quite attractive.

Regarding the Viscounty of Doneraile; the St. Leger family has been represented in Ireland since the 1500's. Sir Warham St. Leger (early ancester of present Lord Doneraile) was appointed Commander for the Govenor of Munster in 1599. He was killed in single combat by Hugh Maguire, Lord of Fermanagh, who died himself at the same time.

Additional title held by the Viscount Doneraile: Baron Doneraile of Doneraile in the Peerage of Ireland, 1776.
